Tenets of Great Care:
Snake Therapy Code of Ethics
For The Management of Captive Reptiles
This guide represents our foundation for ethical reptile caretaking, emphasizing the respect for reptile sentience, evidence-based practices, the responsibility of caretakers to continuously learn, share knowledge with and support others, and promotes goals for the improvement of captive management methods.
This outline is intended for use by all who seek a model for humane caretaking practices. It was created in collaboration with other members of the reptile caretaking community, and can and will be amended as new scientific research and improved methodology becomes available.
There is no singular, definitive system of captive management for any species, and “perfection” is not a reasonable expectation. However, these guidelines offer exemplary standards for the continuous journey of advancement, for the health and wellbeing of the animals under our protection, and for ourselves as their guardians.
